I recently purchased two letters from Walter Jordan (Company C) written in April 1864. What I am trying to understand is where he wrote them. Both letters identify the location as 'Camp near Brandy Station, Va.
I collect material related to Culpeper County, VA during the war, and the 1863-64 Winter encampment is a rich source.
I know from the records and accounts that the 1st Maine Heavy Artillery did not arrive into the 'Seat of War' until the fighting moved to Spotsylvania Court House.
Both letters are addressed to 'Friend Crosswell,' whose first name was Thomas and both discuss a situation at home (one of his family was sent to the poor house).
So, the question is, how and why is Walter Jordan in Brandy Station, over a month before the unit joined the army? Any help with this answer, I would be grateful.
