I would have to say that my perceptions of the song align a good deal with yours...with one departure. When I first heard 'Goodbye' on the radio back in '69, the vision that came to my mind WAS of a mini-skirted lass with long straight hair parted in the middle who dressed representative of the British 'Mod' scene. The musical arrangement is definitely a throwback to the Merry Olde England style that the Beatles (Mary Hopkin's mentors) were incorporating into many of their songs at the end of the run. That is when they weren't going to the psychedelic/hard rock side of the studio. As always, Jeffrey, my man...great insight and analysis. And then there's Mary's other 'Oh Wow' tune...'Temma Harbour'...which is another commentary for another post.
