Good comments Jeff. What's interesting about the countdowns themselves is the reflection of the public's buying habits. Also, they mirror the trends of the times, i.e, 1978. Back then, you either loved disco or hated it. Conversely, because disco was so entrenched at the time, a strong disco record was sure to stay around for a good while because it was first exposed in clubs before it was picked up by radio. That development produced a situation whereby the non-disco releases HAD to be strong. They were...also stayed around because of their quality, and thus you had for a time...a logjam on the charts.
