I remember 'Ode To Billie Joe' as the perfect song for the times, the 'times' being 1967. The arrangement was mainstream, meaning both hippies and adults could handle it. I mentioned during the countdown how the DJ's played up Bobbie Gentry's striking good looks and physique, and although it may sound a little 'sexist', there's no denying that the guys who programmed the records allowed this to figure in to their decision to give OTBJ airplay not a little bit. What I REALLY remember about the song that gave it such prominence so quickly after its release, was the storyline. The combination of the haunting arrangement and the deep mystery surrounding the 'throwing something off the Tallahachie bridge'...in other words, What was thrown off the bridge? Yes, it's the little things like all of the aforementioned that prove combustible for a record's meteoric rise such as this one. Good comments, Jeff. You managed to get my brain working at this early hour of the day! Bob |
