From 1929 until 2005, there was a radio station here in Philly, WPEN-AM, known as the "Station of the Stars." When I first started listening, the station played music from the 1920s-1950s, and later expanded to the "softer side" of the 1960s-1970s. While other stations were constantly changing their formats, WPEN remained constant, and it was a real pleasure to some great performers as Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan, the Dorseys, Glen Miller; and later, Elvis, the Platters, the Everly Brothers, the Carpenters, and Neil Diamond, just to mention a few. There were some great readio personalities, too; the late Joe Niagra, Tom Moran, Ken Garland, Bill Webber, and Grady and Hurst. Monday through Friday,Bob Craig had an hour of Frank Sinatra. In 2004, WPEN changed its format to oldes (1954-65), and added radio personalities Jim Nettleton and Christy Springfield from WOGL-FM, as well as the legendary Jerry Blavat. Unfortunately, due to poor ratings, the oldies format was dropped in the fall of 2005, and WPEN is now a sports talk station. Like Philly needs TWO sports talk stations? Oh well... It's great to hear the music from this era again. Thanks, Bob, for putting it together. Nanci |
