Ed, I'm glad that you finally think I'm worth giving a shot to...as you were the first to turn me down when I tried to get into radio back in the summer of 1976 at WITH. Mr. Gale was right. I WAS born 30 years too late. Right to the year! Hmmmm, let's see...you fired Gale in '96, turned down Mathers in '76, and we're all here enjoying the oldies in '06. Do we see a pattern here? These countdowns are a kick, as before I choose one...I never know what tunes await and many of these songs are real memory-joggers. I wish I could get my hands on an Ed Graham aircheck from WCAO or WWIN from back in the day. If you have one, you probably wouldn't share it anyway. If I had it, I'd put it out on the site for everybody to hear it. But the many who've worked with you know that you're a great jock and programmer. When you and I finally got to work together in '96 and '97 at WITH, your programming ideas and voiceovers on the promos and image liners were top notch. I've told people how you came up with the idea to format the hourly spot sets on WITH in a way that was reminiscent of Top 40 back in the earlier times, i.e., 2 songs, spots, 2 songs, spots, 3 songs, etc. Our good friend Dave Wright (whose agency kept our paychecks from rubberizing in the last days of WITH before Salem took over) continues to maintain that in over 20 years of radio buying, he NEVER had a station that worked for his advertisers like WITH did in that time frame. You can't get any better testimony than that. Anyway, if Mr. Gale sends a sailboat to Bimini via the Caymans and retrieves all the cash he's been stashing away, then he'll hire you and me and we'll do it again. Meanwhile, folks seem to keep finding the site so I think Mrs. Graham ought to convince you to produce an hourly show each week and allow me to put it on Ultimate Oldies for others to hear your style. Right along side Jack Gale at the top of the home page. If I can display his publicity shot from '59, replete with cigar (which he gave up more than 30 years ago), than I'll post that shot of you wearing a crew cut on WWIN from 1962. Thanks, Ed. You really have done a lot of good things for many folks over the years, including me. Bob |
