Subject: RE: Trying Trivia Weekend - Connect The Two Songs - Pt. 2 |
|
John wrote... I'm often told I don't know much about music. Granted, I really don't. Our reply is....... John also wrote... Interesting notes about non existent, artificial group members. Weren't The Rip Chords like that, too? Jim replies... I honestly do not know. Apart from "Little Cobra", I have a second beautiful record by them called "Here I Stand" - it is magnificent, but having said all that, I know virtually nothing about them apart from the fact that Terry Melcher and Bruce Johnson were the voices on the records. Was there a different lineup on stage? Or was it for photos? I feel there is a story there but I do not seem to recall it! There are those records which sort of pop up - you buy them, and the band never seem to go much further, so you never get to meet them, or indeed to meet anybody who knew anybody in the group - and that's it. But sometimes, years later, you get lucky. I loved a Californian group called The Castells. They had two two 30 hits - "Sacred" (1961) and "So This Is Love" (1962) both on Era, and it seems they were pals of Brian Wilson. And then they sort of disappeared, and that was about 45 years ago. Some time back, while checking on religious or inspirational songs, I came across the name "Chuck Girard". The name struck a bell but I could not remember why. Weeks later - I realised that a Chuck Girard had been in The Castells. Contacted him - he is the same guy (and a really nice guy at that) - and we were able to exchange correspondence. Nowadays, he is big in the inspirational/religious market, but remembers the whole experience with great affection. So - who knows - someday I may know something about the Rip Chords. Better late than never. |
