I'd like to offer a couple of thoughts. First of all, Saturday is preferable to Friday. Next, check around your town to see if there is a big event similar to yours on the same night or same weekend that may prove to be tough competition. Of course, you have to advertise. Don't even rely on word of mouth, as you'll be disappointed. Like Mr. Dee says, the first time is always the toughest.

If you can, see if your local VFW hall will provide the venue and cut you a deal. You didn't mention where you live. Sometimes the part of the country where you are can have a bearing on how and where to promote it. Also, if you go for live entertainment and a large overhead, you'll need at least 60 days and preferably 90 days to sell tickets. I know a guy who promoted a concert in baltimore several years back with five very large national oldies acts, and had a radio station co-promote it (another good idea if you can find the right format in your town), yet still lost thousands because he started promoting it just 30 days before the event. Whatever you do, be careful with your expenses and if you break even the first time out, you're blessed...and have a great base to do a follow up event and make it profitable.
