Oh - the expensive version is on Capitol? I wonder exactly what that comprises? I cannot be sure that "16 Tons" will in true stereo - because I am not sure when Capitol started recording their pop/country output in true stereo. I have a feeling it might have been as late as 1958 or 1959. Before that, they did record some instrumental music in stereo - I think Capitol's first stereo recording was "Kenton In Hi-FI" by Stan Kenton, and their second was an instrumental album by comedian Jackie Gleason - cannot remember the title now. I could not put an exact date on either but I would have put it as early to mid 1957. As "16 Tons" was recorded in mid 1955, I would say it is unlikely it was done in stereo - but then you never know. Remember "Walk In The Room" well - it was a UK cover of the US Jackie DeShannon release, which I think was on Liberty. It was the follow-up to her version of "Needles & Pins" which the Searcher also covered. She is one of the greatest pop songwriters of all time - really brilliant |
