I interviewed Bobby Rydell on Baltimore's WITH radio in February, 1995 and essentially the reason we had him on the air was Allen Klein. At the time Bobby was releasing a CD of a dozen of his hits re-recorded for K-Tel. He cut the tracks in the original studio in Philly with the original backup singers. All because of Klein. Rydell related to me (and the audience) that Klein for some inexplicable reason would not re-release the Cameo originals. Not just his, but everybody's, including Chubby, the Orlons, etc. People were writing and asking Rydell at every turn why they couldn't find his originals in the stores. Bobby said he had for years personally appealed to Allen Klein to put out the original songs but to no avail. Finally Klein passed the reins to his son several years ago and finally all of the Cameo stuff was released in a nice 4-CD boxed set. A footnote on Rydell. Although several LP's exist from the early 60's labeled STEREO from the Cameo/Wyncote labels, they were not really 'stereo'...and to my knowledge...the only Rydell hit song ever released in true stereo was 'That Old Black Magic' back in '61. Good topic, John..... |
