Subject: RE: Session: Bill Haley & His Comets - (We're Gonna) Rock Around The Clock - 1955

Message Detail:
Sounds closer to the live sound Bill had - particularly the slap bass which you can hear quite clearly here.

Nice one.

Heard the original for the first time when I was eleven.

Can actually remember hearing it for the first time.

I was on holiday in Bray, in Ireland, in August 1955, and there was am amusement arcade with a jukebox called Dawsons.

A gang of English "teddy boys" monopolised the jukebox every night, and I stood quietly at the back, tring to look inconspicuous, while they spent their money entertainng me.

The other tracks I remember them playing, were "Mambo Rock" by Bill Haley, and "Davy Crockett" by Bill Hayes.

Had no idea what rock and roll was - but I knew I liked Bill Haley!

A year later, August 1956, we went back to Bray, and by now, the Teddy Boys were playing everything from Fats Domino, to The Platters, to Bill Haley, to Little Richard.

I was hooked.

Looking back, I think my Mom was right when she said no good ever came from those amusement arcades!

Went home, bought the sheet music of Fats Domino's "Ain't That A Shame" and asked my piano teacher to show me how to play it.

He looked at it with total distaste, muttered something about the left hand being more important than the right "in that sort of music", and promptly told my Mom to find another teacher as I was getting "too advanced" (by which I presume he really meant "retarded").

I have always liked Bill Haley.
