The Five Americans recorded on the Dallas-based Abnak label, which has an interesting story behind it. The label was founded by insurance executive John Abdnor, Sr, who was the father of John Abnor, Jr, part of the duo of Jon and Robin. Apparently the elder Abdnor started up the label as a vehicle for his son's interests, but became the Five Americans' personal manager after the band had some nationwide success. Interestingly, the Abnak label logo looks pretty similar to the old Atlantic Records logo. Meanwhile, Jon and Robin had a Top-20 hit in May of 1967 with "Do it Again a Little Bit Slower," however their followup songs, which were recorded under the name of Jon and Robin and the In Crowd, didn't have near the success that their debut single did. When I was a kid growing up in eastern Idaho I did hear one of their songs quite a bit called, "Dr. Jon (the Medicine Man), which game out in the early spring of 1968. Although nationally this song hovered near the bottom of the Top 100 nationally, some markets played it quite often and most never played it. Here's a youtube link to the song -- see if you remember this one!
