Subject: Isaac Myers Maritime Park Open'g Soon |
|
Wanted to let you know that the Frederick Douglass - Isaac Myers Maritime Park Opens March 2006 across from Federal Hill in Baltimore, Maryland's Inner Harbour. This new park will feature a re-creation of the first marine shipyard and marine railway operated by black Americans of African descent, as well as a fabulous restoration of the "Sugar House," the oldest remaining industrial building on the waterfront. The new Weinberg Education Center completes the Maritime Park, honoring 19th century abolistionist Frederick Douglass, who, at one time, lived in Baltimore and worked in the maritime trades. Isaac Myers founded the shipyard and was instrumental in helping create one of the first black maritime unions. If the marine railway is to be fully functional (and I have no idea if it will be) perhaps it could host America's oldest and ONLY operational steam tugboat, the BALTIMORE. That would be one of the best ways of getting an occassional bottom scraping party up and running. Just a thought, |
