Subject: Tug BALTIMORE & Submarine DEUTSCHLAND

Message Detail:
Greetings Folkert,

I just re-discovered to-day that, in July of 1916, both the German ambassador to America and Captain Paul Knig, skipper of the merchant submarine DEUTSCHLAND (first such vessel to transit the Atlantic Ocean) were accompanied by Baltimore City Mayor Preston for a brief excursion aboard the 1906 Steam Tug BALTIMORE. At one time, the party of dignitaries arrived at the moored North German Lloyd Line's DEUTSCHLAND for a social inspection and the BALTIMORE'S American flag was transfered to the Submarine DEUTSCHLAND and flown from the merchantman's fore truck while the mayor and his party were aboard?

Walt
