This is in reply to your recent posting on the Art of the Modelbuilder board hosted by the Marine Historical Society of Detroit. There are some model tugboat builder-operators who would come to such an event. I was in Baltimore last August to visit the TAMAROA; I have a 51 inch long model of her. We were in York, PA for their model regatta and made the side trip to Baltimore. Here are some of the question that came to my mind. Where would we be operating and dispaying our models? The harbor can get quite choppy and is not suitable for some of the r/c models that would show up. A totally sheltered area, similar to where USCGC TANEY is would be best. What kind of events are you planning? I'm in the Scale Ship Modelers Association of North America, http://www.ssmana.org/ , and there are some events listed inour handbook that might be what you're looking for. In the Precision Steering event, a boat must navigate through a marked course, tugboats can tow a barge. In the Salvage event, a "derelict vessel" or runaway barge is set adrift; the tugboats make a run to the barge and tow it back. The salvage e=vent is a timed event for one tug at a time. Tugs have the option of pushing the barge in or dragging a towline and try to snag a bridle on the barge. The Most REalistic Operation event features boats with all the bells and whistle; as well as working fire pumps, rotating radars, anchor or towing winches, etc. There is also a Pass in Review marine parade event where all the boats circle arun the pond and a reviewing stand. The Pass in Review is best down with boats of the same relative scale, like 1/48 & 1/50, or 1/32 and 1/35 scale.
