Subject: On the Trail of Steam Tug Balto's Journey's |
|
Mig and Doug, Bob Pratt and I were just discussing such things yesterday.... We hope to make a trip down to the Baltimroe City Archives soon to see wehere the ship's log(s) might be. I don't believe such books to have been turned over to the Maryland State Archives when the Harbor Board material was transfered from the succeeding agency - the Maryland Port Authority. Locating those logs ought to give us much more of an insight as to BALTIMORE's day-to-day operations and the vessels she may have assisted too. As to the daily routine, you might want to check out the sidebar 'Tug History' and then click on 'City Tug Days' to read more about a day-in-the-life... Anybody in Baltimore City of surrounding area have a bit of free time (and a few dollars for photocopies) to conduct a bit or research on BALTIMORE'S past? Might be surprised at what you find! I think the City Archives is only open during the weekdays and during regular business hours. BALTIMORE needs all the TLC she can get as she glides closer to her 100th birthday party, but there's still a lot of useful research yet to be uncovered within the now-dusty bins of antiquity. No matter you age or stamina, this is a project we can all get involved with. To-gether we shall see the 'smoke go up and the engine roar, the wheel go round-and-round - Stephen Foster lyrics from the steamboat song about the GLENDY BURKE. Walt |
